Six policemen were injured when a mob attacked them after they arrested a Trinamool Congress activist in Sandeshkhali, North 24 Parganas, an officer said on Saturday (January 3, 2026). The Nazat police team went to Boyermari village on the night of January 2 to arrest TMC activist Musa Mollah. When they took Mollah into the police vehicle, a group of villagers attacked them and damaged the vehicle with stones. The six injured cops, including an officer, were treated at a local hospital and later discharged. The officer said, "Mollah, who was arrested on charges of forcibly taking away waterbodies in the area for pisciculture, could finally be taken to the police station after reinforcements were sent and chased away the mob." In addition to Mollah, two local TMC leaders, including the gram panchayat pradhan, were detained for instigating the mob violence, the officer added. In a related incident on January 5, 2024, an ED team was attacked while raiding the residence of TMC local strongman Sheikh Shahjahan over an alleged ration distribution scam. Shahjahan was later arrested by the CBI and is in judicial custody. BJP leader Sajal Ghosh criticized, "The attack on State police showed the 'desperation and brazenness' of TMC activists under Mamata Banerjee's rule." He asked, "Will the State police muster the courage to stand up against the ruling party and take appropriate action?" TMC spokesperson Arup Chakraborty said, "The attack on the police was deplorable, and the party does not support such activities. Whatever action the police take will have our support."
