Over 130 Shelter Overnight at Japan's Mitsumine Shrine Amid Heavy Snowfall
January 3, 2026
More than 130 people had to spend the night inside the Mitsumine Shrine on a mountain in Japan. Heavy snow blocked the roads around the shrine, cutting off access. The shrine is located in Saitama prefecture, about 1,110 meters above sea level near Chichibu city. Local police closed roads after several accidents, including cars slipping on ice. Around 50 vehicles stayed at the shrine building. Luckily, no one fell ill. Japan faces severe snowfall now, with some places getting up to 40 cm of new snow on Saturday. Over the last three days, some areas have seen as much as 80 cm. Temperatures dropped to -15°C, making the roads icy and dangerous. Mitsumine Shrine is a famous Shinto site dedicated to Izanami and Izanagi, mythical figures who created Japan's islands. It is said to have been founded in the 1st century by Prince Yamato Takeru no Mikoto, son of Emperor Keikō.
