AIMSA Urges Jaishankar to Protect 3,000 Indian Medical Students Amid Iran Protests
January 3, 2026
Violent protests in Iran have sparked concern for nearly 3,000 Indian medical students living there. The All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA) foreign student wing has appealed to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar for urgent intervention. On January 3, 2026, Mohammad Momin Khan, AIMSA Jammu and Kashmir vice president, sent a letter requesting immediate government action.
Khan highlighted the "prevailing situation in the Islamic Republic of Iran and the growing concern regarding the safety and well-being of nearly 3,000 Indian medical students." The letter said students and families face "considerable anxiety" due to the unstable security.
Indian students rely heavily on local hostels and university infrastructure, making them vulnerable during the turmoil. AIMSA urged the Ministry of External Affairs to monitor the situation closely, set up emergency helplines, issue timely advisories, and prepare evacuation plans if needed.
"AIMSA humbly requests the Government of India, through the Ministry of External Affairs, to closely monitor the situation and take proactive and precautionary measures to ensure the safety, security, and uninterrupted communication of Indian medical students in Iran," the letter stated.
The protests in Iran grew from rising prices and economic hardship, leading to clashes between protestors and security forces across many cities. The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association also wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking urgent help for Indian students, especially those from Kashmir.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to Iran, threatening intervention if peaceful protesters are harmed. He wrote, "If Iran shots and violently kills peaceful protesters, which is their custom, the United States of America will come to their rescue. We are locked and loaded and ready to go. Thank you for your attention to this matter!"
Iran's former Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi thanked Trump for his support, calling it a source of hope for Iranians risking their lives for change. Former Queen Farah Pahlavi also urged security forces to stand with the people.
Iran condemned Trump's remarks as "unlawful threats". Its UN envoy Amir Saeed Iravani warned that any external interference would violate Iran's sovereignty. "The United States of America bears full responsibility for any consequences arising from these illegal threats and any subsequent escalation of tensions," he said.
Protests continued across cities such as Qom, Mashhad, and Tehran, fueled by strikes and economic woes. The situation remains volatile as India watches closely over its citizens' safety in Iran.
