First Four Victims Identified in Swiss Ski Resort Fire That Killed 40
January 3, 2026
Police have identified the first four people who died in the deadly fire at a Swiss ski resort bar on New Year's Eve. The victims include two Swiss women, aged 21 and 16, and two Swiss men, aged 18 and 16. Their bodies have been returned to their families, said Valais cantonal police. This progress is thanks to extensive work by police and the Institute of Forensic Medicine. Authorities are still identifying other victims. The fire at Le Constellation in Crans-Montana killed 40 people and injured 119 others. Most injured have been identified, but many families still await news about missing loved ones. Preliminary investigations suggest the fire started from sparklers on champagne bottles held too close to the ceiling. Switzerland's President Guy Parmelin called the event "one of the worst tragedies" in the country's history. Details about the named victims have not been released. Many victims were teenagers, reflecting Le Constellation's popularity among young people. The local drinking age is 16. Of the injured, 113 have been identified, including 71 Swiss, 14 French, and 11 Italian citizens. The first named victim was a teenage Italian golfer, though officials have not officially confirmed this. Families can seek help by calling the helpline at +41 848 112 117.
