Kerala Proposes Extending Angamaly-Erumely Sabari Rail Line to Thiruvananthapuram and Vizhinjam Port
January 3, 2026
The Kerala Rail Development Corporation Ltd. (KRDCL) has proposed to extend the Angamaly-Erumely Sabari rail line all the way to Thiruvananthapuram and the Vizhinjam international seaport. This plan involves linking the line from Erumely to Punalur, then onward to the state capital and port.
Earlier, in 2021, KRDCL had decided to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for the Erumely-Punalur extension after restarting the Angamaly-Erumely Sabari line. Now that Kerala has approved moving forward with the Angamaly-Erumely section, KRDCL has urged the state government to study the feasibility of extending the line to Thiruvananthapuram.
A survey was sanctioned by Indian Railways in 2013 for extending the Sabari line from Erumely to Thiruvananthapuram. The project was paused due to low returns, but the traffic situation in Kerala has changed drastically since then. Congestion on the M.C. Road has increased significantly, and with growing cargo traffic expected from the Vizhinjam port, road traffic could worsen further.
KRDCL’s letter highlights that the new rail line stretching about 160 km and connecting 13 major towns, including Nedumangad (newly linked to rail), would ease traffic and reduce pollution. The project will follow Railways’ norms to connect all towns with populations above 50,000. It also offers potential for higher train speeds, unlike existing lines with sharp curves.
The letter also suggests exploring inclusion of this project under the Rail Sagar Scheme to support faster implementation and growth.
This extension could mark a major transformation in Kerala’s transport landscape, improving passenger and cargo movement while cutting down the carbon footprint.
