Trump Claims Capture of Venezuela’s Maduro After Pre-Dawn Caracas Attack
January 3, 2026
US President Donald Trump said Venezuela’s dictator Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were captured and flown out of Venezuela following a "large scale" early morning assault on Caracas and nearby areas. Trump promised a press conference in Florida at 11am local time (4pm GMT).
Venezuela’s government accused the US of attacking civilian and military sites, with explosions and low-flying aircraft reported in Caracas just before dawn on Saturday. The government said the assault hit Caracas and three other regions: Miranda, La Guaira, and Aragua.
The Venezuelan statement called on its people to rise against what it labeled an "imperialist aggression." It warned that Washington’s action could plunge Latin America into chaos and described it as "an extremely serious" act of military aggression.
Venezuela accused the US of trying to seize control of its oil and mineral resources. It appealed to the international community to condemn the violation of international law risking millions of lives.
Early Saturday, Colombia’s president Gustavo Petro demanded an immediate emergency session of the UN Security Council, announcing via social media that Venezuela had been attacked.
This dramatic claim from Trump and the ensuing chaos signal a sharp escalation in US-Venezuelan tensions amid the region’s growing instability.
