Belgian PM’s Cat Maximus Charms With Witty Instagram, 142K Followers
January 4, 2026
Maximus Textoris Pulcher, the Belgian Prime Minister’s new office cat, is winning hearts across social media. Officially announced in August at Rue de la Loi 16, Brussels, Maximus now has over 142,000 Instagram followers, making him the second most popular political figure online after his owner, Prime Minister Bart De Wever. The grey Scottish fold cat was rescued and adopted by De Wever, who said, “I have a cat in my office, it is grey and it does not catch … mice, but I love it anyway.” Maximus’s Instagram posts show him relaxing, playing, and even humorously commenting on Belgium’s political climate. For example, a post about a national strike reads, “Another strike,” while another shows Maximus annoyed by cabinet ministers working on a Sunday. De Wever’s team uses the account to give the public a fun look inside the prime minister’s office. Political scientist Prof Dave Sinardet explained that the cat’s account helps soften De Wever’s serious image by showing his warmer side. The Instagram page often features De Wever hard at work, underscoring his dedication. De Wever, known for his dry humor, also shares everyday moments on his own social media, such as tram rides and hotel stays during EU summits. Maximus adds a positive, light touch to Belgium’s political scene. Posts like Maximus calling De Wever a “hero” after a tough EU summit mix humor with subtle praise. Critics of the cat’s social media presence rarely win public support, as the account is seen as a fun escape from political stress. Overall, Maximus has become a charming symbol of Belgium’s political life, blending kitty cuteness with clever political commentary.
