Silent March Honors 40 Dead in Swiss Alpine Bar Fire on New Year's Eve
January 4, 2026
CRANS-MONTANA: On Sunday, hundreds marched in silence to remember the 40 people who died in a New Year's Eve fire at a Crans-Montana bar in Switzerland. The victims, many of whom were young, suffered severe injuries. Mourners left the Chapelle Saint-Christophe after a Mass and gathered at the Le Constellation bar, now shielded by white screens, to lay flowers and pay respects.
Swiss authorities have identified 24 of the 40 victims. They include Swiss, Italian, Romanian, French, Turkish, and Emirati citizens, mostly teens and young adults.
Laetitia Brodard, grieving mother of 16-year-old Arthur Brodard, who died in the fire, said in a Facebook video, "Our Arthur has now left to party in paradise. We can start our mourning, knowing that he is in peace and in the light." She had given her DNA to help identify victims, a process complicated by severe burns.
A criminal investigation is underway against the bar's managers. They face charges including involuntary homicide and causing a fire. Investigators suspect that sparkling candles on Champagne bottles touched the ceiling, igniting the blaze. They are checking safety measures like fire extinguishers and emergency exits.
Swiss President Guy Parmelin declared a national day of mourning on January 9. Meanwhile, 35 injured people were transferred to hospitals across Europe, including France, Germany, Italy, and Belgium. France's Health Minister Stephanie Rist confirmed 17 patients are receiving care in France.
The tragedy has shaken the mountain town deeply, casting a shadow on the year's first days as families and friends grieve together.
