Kerala's Haripad Hospital Faces Medical Negligence Case After Dialysis Deaths

The police have registered a medical negligence case against Haripad taluk hospital in Kerala. Two patients who had dialysis on December 29 died after severe reactions. The family of Ramachandran, one of the deceased, filed the complaint. Another patient who also reacted during dialysis but later recovered filed a similar complaint. The police have charged the hospital authorities, including the Superintendent and dialysis technicians, under relevant legal sections. The hospital must form a medical board for a detailed inquiry. On December 29, four patients experienced chills and vomiting during dialysis at Haripad hospital. Three were sent to Alappuzha Government Medical College, where two died on December 30 and 31. Initial tests of water and fluids from the dialysis machines showed no contamination. Hospital officials said machines were serviced regularly and water quality was closely checked. A Health Department team, including experts, took samples for detailed analysis, including tests for endotoxins. The results are awaited. The families said the patients were healthy before dialysis and suspect infection from the hospital. Investigations are ongoing to check for blood infections and hospital-acquired causes. Kerala's Health Minister has also demanded a report. The dialysis unit remains closed for 15 days during the probe. Meanwhile, Haripad hospital arranged dialysis slots for patients at Mavelikkara district hospital.
