Teen Hillcrest Castle Survivor Lucas Reid Dies in Tragic Ebike Crash in Tasmania
January 5, 2026
A 15-year-old boy, Lucas Reid, who survived the 2021 Hillcrest jumping castle disaster, died in an ebike accident on New Year’s Eve. Reid lost control of his bike and crashed into a pole on Don Heads Road near Devonport, Tasmania, around 7.30pm on Wednesday.
Reid was one of three children injured when six kids died in the Hillcrest tragedy. Devonport Mayor Alison Jarman expressed deep sorrow and said, "It’s horrendous. It’s a tragic event … a beautiful young 15-year-old boy." She urged everyone to be "kind and considerate and respectful of the situation."
Tasmania police confirmed a helmet was found but it is unknown if Reid was wearing it at the time. A nearby resident tried to help, but Reid died at the scene. Inspector Nick Clark called the accident "tragic" and extended sympathy to the family and friends.
Reid was remembered as resilient and a passionate AFL fan. A 2022 video from the GWS Giants showed him in the locker room after a game. GWS Giants captain Toby Greene said Reid was a "great young man [who] had overcome so much" and praised his "resilience and optimism." Giants CEO David Matthews described Reid's "resilience and energy" and noted, "He wasn’t going to let anything stop him."
Tasmanian MP Jane Howlett expressed the state government's condolences, saying, "It’s absolutely devastating, it really is. And we will continue to support the Hillcrest family and Lucas’s family."
In 2021, six children died when a mini tornado lifted a jumping castle at Hillcrest primary school. The operator was found not guilty of workplace safety charges last year. Police are currently investigating Reid’s death and will prepare a report for the coroner.
