Eleven monkeys, including two langurs, were found dead in Tumakuru's Devarayanadurga-Durgadahalli forest area over January 2 and 3. Forest officials discovered nine monkey and two langur carcasses scattered within 200 to 500 metres. The animals showed signs of suspected food poisoning. "Rice was found in the oesophagus and intestines," a senior forest official said. The mouth and neck areas appeared bluish, increasing poisoning suspicion. Officials ruled out immediate signs of disease. Samples from the animals were sent to labs in Bengaluru and the Forensic Science Laboratory for detailed tests. Reports are expected soon. Authorities have increased surveillance to prevent further deaths and will take action based on lab results.
