Snow Chaos Hits UK: Hundreds of Schools Closed, Flights Cancelled Amid Amber Warnings
January 5, 2026
Heavy snowfall has forced hundreds of schools to close and many flights to be cancelled across parts of the UK. Amber weather warnings remain active in Scotland, predicting heavy snow and major travel problems. Yellow warnings for snow and ice cover much of the UK, affecting England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Schools in Shetland, Orkney, Western Isles, Aberdeenshire, and Moray closed on Monday. Reports say snow has reached 14cm deep in Aberdeenshire. The Met Office warns that up to 10cm of snow may fall in low areas and 20-30cm on hills, risking rural isolation. Network Rail Scotland said trains will face delays and cancellations until at least midday on routes like Aberdeen-Dundee and Inverness-Wick. Flights have been hit as well. Loganair cancelled flights from Aberdeen and Inverness. Liverpool John Lennon Airport shut its runway early Monday. In Northern Ireland, 186 schools shut amid travel chaos. Philip McCullagh, principal of St Patrick’s and St Brigid’s College, said, “It is very, very bad,” warning about ice and snow. Belfast airports also cancelled flights. Translink cautioned delays on bus routes. The Police Service of Northern Ireland urged drivers to clear ice and drive carefully. Ireland faces yellow weather warnings with Met Éireann calling conditions “treacherous.” The UK Health Security Agency keeps amber warnings in England until Friday morning. Scottish Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop advised: “If you can delay your journey until the amber warning has expired, please do so.” She thanked frontline workers like gritter drivers and police for working in bad conditions.
