Son of BJP MLA Renuka Singh Booked for Hit-and-Run in Raipur, Victim in Critical Condition

Balwant Singh, son of BJP MLA Renuka Singh, was booked on January 5, 2026, for a hit-and-run in Raipur, Chhattisgarh. Balwant, 34, was driving his friend’s SUV when he hit Tribhuvan Thakur, a 34-year-old disc jockey, around 1 a.m. Thakur was critically injured and dragged several metres by the car. Balwant tried to flee but crashed into a road divider. A police officer said, "The victim has suffered grievous injuries on his head, ribs, legs and back. He is in a critical condition." Balwant faces charges under Sections 125(a) [act endangering personal safety of others] and 281 [rash and negligent driving] of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The police plan to add more charges once the victim recovers. Renuka Singh, Balwant’s mother, was Union Minister for Tribal Affairs (2019-2023) and is currently the MLA from Bharatpur-Sonhat in Chhattisgarh. The case is being handled by Telibandha Police Station.
