Two Hindus Killed in Bangladesh Amid Rising Minority Violence in 24 Hours
January 6, 2026
Bangladesh witnessed two deadly attacks on its Hindu minority within 24 hours, raising serious concerns about safety and law and order. Sarat Chakraborty Mani, 40, a grocery shop owner from Narsingdi, was attacked with sharp weapons and died on the way to the hospital. Mani lived a peaceful life and had no known enemies. His family believes the attack was due to his Hindu identity.
On the same day, Hindu journalist Rana Pratap Bairagi, 45, also known as Rana Pratap, was shot multiple times and had his throat slit in Jashore. Police recovered seven bullet casings from the scene and are investigating. Witnesses said attackers on a motorcycle called him out before shooting him. Rana ran an ice factory and was the son of a schoolteacher.
These killings add to a grim tally of six Hindu deaths in 18 days. Earlier attacks include mob lynching of Dipu Chandra Das and the murder of pharmacy owner Khokon Das. Bajendra Biswas, a factory worker, was also shot dead recently.
Besides killings, sexual violence against Hindu women has increased fears. A 40-year-old Hindu widow in Jhenaidah was tortured and raped by two men. The accused are arrested, and police promised strict action.
The violence has drawn international concern. India criticized the Bangladesh interim government led by Muhammad Yunus for "unremitting hostility" toward minorities and is closely watching the situation.
