January 6, 2026
An inmate named Faiaz Islam Shaikh (25) at the Bhiwandi sub-jail in Maharashtra’s Thane district assaulted a police officer and destroyed CCTV cameras on Sunday. Shaikh was already in jail for a previous offence. According to officials, he shouted abuses, questioned why he was detained, and demanded immediate release. He threatened staff and claimed he was "unfazed" by legal action since he had faced similar charges before. Shaikh pulled out three CCTV cameras near the jail gate and smashed them on the floor. He also broke three light bulbs in the area. When a police officer tried to calm him and explain procedures, Shaikh grabbed the officer's collar and pushed him. The Shantinagar police have registered an FIR against him under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. These include Section 132 for assault on a public servant, Section 352 for intentional insult, Section 351(2) for criminal intimidation, and Section 324(4) for mischief causing damage to public property. The police continue to investigate the incident.
