Supreme Court Hears Petitions Against EC’s Special Electoral Roll Revision
January 6, 2026
On January 6, 2025, the Supreme Court continued hearing petitions challenging the Election Commission of India’s decision to conduct a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in several states including Bihar. Earlier, on December 16, Advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay representing the Election Commission said the SIR should happen regularly to remove illegal voters. Chief Justice Kant pointed out that the SIR was being done after 20 years. On January 5, 2026, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar said the main aim of the SIR is to make sure “no eligible Indian citizen is left out of the electoral roll”. The case is ongoing with live updates being reported from the Supreme Court by Krishnadas Rajagopal.
