Indian Gang Rape Survivor in Haryana Discharged After a Week in Hospital
January 6, 2026
A 26-year-old woman from Haryana, India, who survived a brutal gang rape, has been discharged from hospital after one week, police told the BBC. The mother of two suffered serious head and facial injuries along with several fractures. She was admitted to a hospital in Faridabad on 30 December. According to the woman’s sister, she was visiting a friend and waiting for transport just after midnight when two men in an ambulance offered her a ride. They instead drove her to a deserted area, raped her, and then threw her out of the moving vehicle. Police arrested the two men quickly and seized the ambulance, confirming the crime happened between 12:30 and 2:00 am on the night of 29-30 December. Yashpal Yadav, Faridabad police public relations officer, said, "One stood outside the van and kept an eye on the surroundings while the other raped the woman inside the van." The suspects were produced in court and sent to prison. Senior police official Mukesh Kumar told the BBC they have asked the court to allow the survivor to identify the rapists in an "identification parade." After the court approval, she will be asked to pick them out from a group of men. A hospital doctor said the woman arrived at 5:30 am on 30 December with many injuries. Social worker and politician Shalini Chopra, who spoke to the survivor after her discharge, said the woman was "better but still in pain." This case has stirred anger across India, reminding many of the 2012 Delhi gang rape that led to stronger laws and death sentences for some attackers. Yet, despite strict laws, India still reports tens of thousands of rape cases each year. Police recorded 29,670 rapes and 2,796 attempts in 2023. There were also 849 child rape cases and 94 attempts on children reported.
