Egypt Ends Free Hajj Slots, Launches Digital Lottery and Paid Packages for 2026 Pilgrimage
January 6, 2026
Egypt has ended free pilgrimage slots for Hajj starting 2026. Instead, a digital lottery system will select about 12,000 pilgrims. They must buy paid packages through licensed travel firms. This was announced by the Ministry of Social Solidarity and the National Foundation for Facilitating Hajj. Minister Maya Morsi confirmed this change in a press conference. Egypt has shifted away from subsidizing Hajj pilgrimages due to economic pressures faced in recent years. The Ministry of Tourism opened paid Hajj registration via official travel companies. Packages will vary from economy to premium, covering accommodation and transport. Prices have been reduced slightly to ease costs. Pilgrims can no longer depend on government subsidies; they must rely on lottery selection or paid options. Additionally, the Egyptian government made it mandatory to submit a Health Fitness Certificate to get a Hajj visa. This certificate verifies the pilgrim's fitness for the pilgrimage rituals. Visa applications are paused until this health document is provided. These reforms aim to ensure transparency, fairness, and smooth management ahead of Saudi Arabia's 2026 Hajj season. Egypt's new approach reflects budget realities and aligns with Saudi visa and safety rules, marking a major change in how millions plan their spiritual journey.
