Macron Hosts Ukraine, Allies to Secure Security Guarantees Amid Russia Peace Talks
January 6, 2026
French President Emmanuel Macron is hosting Ukraine's leader Volodymyr Zelensky and top allies to agree on security guarantees for Kyiv during potential ceasefire talks with Russia. Over 30 countries from the 'Coalition of the Willing' are attending, including US mediators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
Zelensky recently met US President Donald Trump, stating that 90% of the peace plan was agreed. However, the remaining 10% involves difficult territorial concessions in the Donbas region. Russia controls around 75% of Donetsk and nearly all of Luhansk, key parts of Donbas.
Russia began its full invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and has been pushing to fully control Donbas. Russia opposes ceasefires and has increased attacks, especially targeting Ukraine's power supply during winter. Ukraine responded with drone strikes against a Russian oil depot in Lipetsk.
The Paris meeting includes UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. Leaders aim to finalize details on a multi-national force to protect Ukraine post-peace deal, security guarantees against new Russian attacks, and support for Ukraine's military and economy.
Ukraine's European allies want a US "backstop" pledge to defend Ukraine if Russia breaks peace terms. Zelensky said Washington offered 15-year security guarantees after talks in Florida, but timing is unclear.
The talks happen amid US military action in Venezuela and Trump's controversial plans, including wanting to annex Greenland. Danish Prime Minister warned such moves could end the trans-Atlantic alliance. Macron will try to keep the focus on Ukraine during the discussions.
