Six Dead as Europe Battles Snow, Ice, and Freezing Temperatures
January 6, 2026
Six people have died as snow, ice, and freezing temperatures cause problems in parts of Europe. In the Landes region of south-west France, three people died and 15 were injured in road accidents on Tuesday. Two more deaths happened in accidents near Paris. In Sarajevo, Bosnia, a woman died when a snow-covered tree branch fell on her.
Paris woke up to snow covering rooftops and landmarks. Heavy snow led to the closure of six airports in northern and western France. In the Netherlands, hundreds of flights were cancelled at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport as workers cleared runways and de-iced planes.
Train travel in the Netherlands faced chaos after an IT failure stopped domestic services early Tuesday, adding to weather disruptions. Eurostar trains from Amsterdam to Paris were also late or cancelled.
Freezing weather spread across Europe. In south and east Germany, temperatures dropped below -10C (14F) early Tuesday. German meteorologists expect a storm on Friday with heavy snow in northern and eastern areas.
In Britain, temperatures fell to -12.5C overnight. Snow disrupted rail, road, and air travel and forced hundreds of schools in the northern regions to close.
Northern Italy saw temperatures below freezing, with snow expected in Emilia-Romagna, Marche, and Tuscany. Central and southern Italy had mild winds but heavy rains. In Rome, rain caused the Tiber River to swell, affecting Pope Leo’s Epiphany blessing at St Peter’s Square. Mayor Roberto Gualtieri limited public access to parks and places at risk from flooding and falling trees. Two large pine trees recently fell in Rome near famous sites.
Balkan countries faced heavy snow and rain, causing swollen rivers and power and water outages. Serbia’s western local authorities declared emergencies and warned drivers, as many travel for Orthodox Christmas and holidays.
Strong winds and rough seas hit the Adriatic coastlines in Croatia and Montenegro, adding to the stormy weather.
