The Indian government has extended the deadline for social media platform X, led by Elon Musk, to submit a detailed Action Taken Report (ATR) until January 7, 2026. This follows serious concerns over indecent and sexually explicit content generated through the misuse of X's built-in AI tool called Grok. X requested more time from the IT Ministry to prepare its report after it was initially asked to respond by January 5. On January 4, X's 'Safety' handle stated it will act against illegal content, including Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), by removing such content, suspending accounts permanently, and cooperating with local governments and law enforcement as needed. It warned, "Anyone using or prompting Grok to make illegal content will suffer the same consequences as if they upload illegal content," echoing Elon Musk's firm stance. The IT Ministry's January 2 directive accused Grok AI of being misused to create fake accounts and produce or share obscene images and videos targeting women. The Ministry said such actions violate laws under the IT Act and show a severe failure in platform safeguards. It warned that X's failure to comply with due diligence rules would remove its safe harbour protection under Section 79 of the IT Act, exposing the company to legal consequences including under the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. X was instructed to remove all vulgar, obscene, and unlawful content immediately and to implement strict enforcement such as suspending or terminating violating users. The Ministry also demanded a detailed report explaining technical and organizational steps taken against the misuse of the Grok app, oversight by compliance officers, and evidence of law enforcement cooperation. Issues with Grok have drawn international attention as well. The UK’s regulator Ofcom raised concerns about Grok generating undressed images of people and sexualised images of children. Ofcom has contacted X to ensure compliance with UK laws and is considering further action. India’s firm stance highlights growing global scrutiny over AI misuse in social media and demands for stronger controls to protect users, especially vulnerable groups.
