US Plans to Seize Russian Oil Tanker Marinera Near Europe: Reports
January 7, 2026
The United States may seize a Russian-flagged oil tanker called Marinera currently sailing between Scotland and Iceland, CBS News reports. American officials said US forces plan to intercept the ship, which has a history of carrying Venezuelan crude oil and was previously named Bella 1. Last month, the US Coast Guard attempted to board Bella 1 in the Caribbean due to sanctions violations involving Iranian oil, but the tanker changed course, name, and flag—from Guyana to Russia—to avoid capture.
US President Donald Trump ordered a "blockade" on sanctioned oil tankers linked to Venezuela, accusing the country's government of drug trafficking to the US. The planned US action on Marinera comes amid recent US military aircraft arriving in the UK, near the tanker’s current waters.
Russia's foreign ministry said it is "closely monitoring with concern" the situation and claims the ship is sailing legally under international maritime law. Russia criticized the US and NATO for giving the vessel "disproportionate attention," calling for respect for freedom of navigation.
Experts say changing the ship’s name and flag does not protect it from US sanctions, as enforcement focuses on the ship’s true identity and ownership. The US prefers to seize the tanker rather than destroy it, despite challenges due to its location and weather.
This incident follows the recent US military operation to capture Venezuela's former leader Nicolás Maduro, escalating tensions further between the US, Russia, and Venezuela.
