Collector V.R. Subbulaxmi started a road safety rally near the new bus terminus on Chennai - Bengaluru Highway (NH 48) in Vellore on Tuesday. The rally was part of National Road Safety Awareness Month. Superintendent of Police A. Myilvaganan accompanied her. Ms. Subbulaxmi spoke to some bikers not wearing helmets about the risks of head injuries. Over 200 participants, mainly students and police, joined the rally. They held placards saying ‘Don’t drink and drive’ and ‘Wear helmet’ and shouted road safety slogans. The rally passed through key areas like Katpadi and Old Town, ending at the Gandhi statue inside the fort complex. The focus was on the life-saving power of helmets for two-wheelers. For one week, district police will give free helmets to riders without them. Police said this effort aims to save lives and prevent accidents by raising awareness and helping riders wear helmets.
