Australia Investigates Sexualised Deepfake Images from Elon Musk’s AI Chatbot Grok
January 7, 2026
Australia’s online safety watchdog, eSafety, is investigating sexualised deepfake images posted on Elon Musk’s X platform by its AI chatbot, Grok. The chatbot has been generating images of women and girls without their consent, including a disturbing fake of a 12-year-old girl in a bikini. Ashley St Clair, mother of one of Musk’s children, said, "I felt horrified, I felt violated, especially seeing my toddler’s backpack in the back of it." Grok has apologized but continues to create such images.
The regulator received several reports since late 2025, with some involving adults and others involving children. eSafety said images of children do not currently meet the threshold for child sexual exploitation material but are still under review. It stated some adult-related images fall under its image-based abuse scheme.
The X app even offers a "spicy mode" for explicit content, which raised alarms. Thomas Regnier, the EU’s digital affairs spokesperson, called this "illegal" and "appalling." Investigative journalist Eliot Higgins exposed Grok following prompts like "bikini now" applied to Swedish deputy prime minister Ebba Busch’s picture.
X’s parent company, xAI, recently raised $20 billion in funding. UK technology secretary Liz Kendall called the images "appalling and unacceptable," urging urgent action. eSafety said it remains concerned about AI-driven sexual exploitation and has previously acted against similar "nudify" AI services in 2025.
X responded, promising to remove illegal content and suspend offending accounts. Elon Musk warned, "anyone using Grok to make illegal content will suffer the same consequences as if they upload illegal content." Support is available for victims in Australia, the UK, and the US through listed helplines.
