January 7, 2026
On January 7, 2026, the annual mass performance of the pancharatna kritis by saint-composer Thyagarajar took place at the Thyagarajaswamy Athishtanam in Thiruvaiyaru near Thanjavur. This musical event was part of the 179th Aradhana Celebrations organised by Sri Thiyagabrahma Mahotsava Sabha.
The five kritis performed were ‘Jagadanandakaraka’ (Nata), ‘Dudukugala’ (Gaula), ‘Sadhinchene’ (Arabhi), ‘Kanakanaruchira’ (Varali), and ‘Endaro Mahanubhavulu’ (Sri), all set in adi thala. Leading vocalists led the singing, accompanied by traditional instruments like mridangam, flute, ghatam, and ganjira.
A special anointment ceremony was held for the granite and panchaloka idols at the Athishtanam while vedic pandits chanted verses. Nadhaswaram artists supported by thavil performed before and after the pancharatna kritis.
Mridangam maestro Umayalpuram Sivaraman, celebrating his 90th birthday, took part in the festivities. The event concluded with a maha arathi at the Athishtanam.
Senior attendees expressed their joy in witnessing the harikatha and upanyasam sessions that followed immediately after. K. Subramanian of Thanjavur shared, "I used to listen to harikatha and upanyasam on the themes around Thyagabrahmam and his kritis during the festival in the past, where the bhagavathars would quote and recite the saint composer’s verses."
The annual Aradhana event started on January 3 and will end with the pancharatna kritis recital in the morning and the Aanjaneya Uthsavam on Wednesday night.
