Trump Controls Venezuela Oil, Pushes Greenland Purchase, Sends More ICE Agents to Minnesota
January 7, 2026
US President Trump said, "This Oil will be sold at its Market Price, and that money will be controlled by me, as President of the United States of America, to ensure it is used to benefit the people of Venezuela and the United States!" This statement came after US forces seized Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro over the weekend. Venezuela, blocked by Trump's sanctions, has millions of barrels of oil stuck in tankers and storage. Venezuelan officials called Maduro’s capture a kidnapping and accused the US of trying to steal their oil. The move signals Venezuela might allow US oil companies or face further military action.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated, "President Trump has made it well known that acquiring Greenland is a national security priority of the United States, and it’s vital to deter our adversaries in the Arctic region." Leavitt added that using the US military is an option. Greenland's prime minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen called Trump's plans "completely and utterly unacceptable" and urged him to drop his "fantasies about annexation." Denmark’s prime minister Mette Frederiksen warned any US attack on a Nato ally would end the military alliance.
Meanwhile, the Trump administration froze over $10 billion in childcare and family assistance funds for California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, and New York due to suspected fraud, the Department of Health and Human Services said. Also, the Department of Justice revealed it released less than 1% of the Epstein files, drawing Democratic criticism for "lawlessness."
Immigration enforcement ramped up sharply in Minnesota with the largest operation so far. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed a surge of agents to "root out fraud, arrest perpetrators and remove criminal illegal aliens." Todd Lyons, acting ICE director, called it “the largest immigration operation ever taking place right now.” Around 2,000 immigration agents joined the state for 30 days. Community protests and fear among immigrants have increased as arrests continue. Minnesota has the largest Somali population in the US, many of whom are citizens.
Tensions rise as Trump's call for Greenland purchase and Venezuela oil control face strong international and local pushback, while domestic political battles on immigration and social funds intensify.
