Investigation Ordered as Cotton Cloth Found Inside Woman After Cesarean in Wayanad
January 7, 2026
The District Medical Officer of Wayanad, Kerala, has ordered an investigation into alleged medical negligence at Mananthavady Government Medical College Hospital (MCH). This follows a complaint by a 21-year-old woman who discovered a piece of cotton cloth inside her body over two months after a cesarean delivery. The woman gave birth on October 20, 2025, and was discharged on October 25. She later suffered severe abdominal pain and visited the hospital twice but was advised to "drink water" and sent home without proper checks.
Continuing discomfort led to a shocking discovery on December 29, when the woman noticed "a foul smell" and passed a cotton cloth from her body. Her family believes gauze used during delivery was left inside, causing her pain and suffering. The complaint was submitted to Minister O.R. Kelu, prompting district health authorities to start a probe into the hospital's treatment and protocols.
The local police have also received a complaint. Officials said the medical inquiry's results will decide any further action, including possible legal steps.
