Europe Backs Denmark Against US Greenland Deal Amid Heavy Flight Cancellations
January 7, 2026
European leaders stand strong with Denmark and Greenland after US President Donald Trump’s team suggested buying Greenland. UK’s Keir Starmer, France’s Emmanuel Macron, and Germany’s Friedrich Merz said, “It is for Denmark and Greenland, and them only, to decide on matters concerning Denmark and Greenland.” This came after Trump’s aide Marco Rubio told US lawmakers that purchase, not invasion, is the plan. Denmark held an emergency meeting to plan its next steps. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said he expects no Venezuela-style takeover of Greenland but confirmed France is readying responses with Germany and Poland if US acts. On another front, Europe faces disruptions from severe cold. Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport cancelled over 700 flights today due to snow and wind, with 3,300 cancellations since last Friday. Over 1,000 stranded passengers were given beds and food. Paris Charles de Gaulle also saw delays as temperatures plunged across Europe, hitting -9°C in Warsaw and below zero in Berlin, Paris, and Brussels. Meanwhile, EU talks restart on the Mercosur trade deal, aiming to boost trade despite previous French and Italian opposition. This is Jakub Krupa reporting for Europe Live on Wednesday, 7 January 2026.
