Erode issues second notice to 42 illegal resorts near Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve to shut by Jan 12, 2026
January 7, 2026
The Erode district administration has issued a second notice to 42 illegal resorts operating around the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve (STR). These resorts must shut down by January 12, 2026. If they fail to comply, officials will seal the buildings starting January 13.
Environmental activist R. Karpagam of Coimbatore filed a public interest litigation (PIL) in 2022. She accused the resorts of causing serious environmental damage to the hill region.
During a court hearing, the Erode District Collector reported that a joint inspection was done at 53 resorts, lodges, and farmhouses. Only 11 had valid building permissions and licenses. The remaining 42 were operating illegally without licenses.
The Collector stated that notices were issued to the owners and leaseholders for building without required permissions. The Madras High Court had planned to pass final orders and seal illegal constructions. The court asked for a report at the next hearing on January 5 and later extended it to January 19.
District Collector S. Kandasamy told The Hindu that notices were served again, directing closure of operations by January 12. Teams led by the Thalavadi Block Development Officer started serving notices in areas like Thalavadi, Thalamalai, Hasanur, and Germalam.
A Rural Development Department official warned, "If the resorts failed to shut down by January 12, the buildings would be sealed on the morning of January 13."
