France Teams Up with Allies on Response if US Invades Greenland Amid Rising Tensions
January 7, 2026
France is working closely with its European partners on how to respond if the US tries to invade Greenland. The French foreign minister, Jean-Noël Barrot, said he will discuss the issue with German and Polish ministers. "We want to take action, but we want to do so together with our European partners," Barrot told France Inter radio. Denmark, which controls Greenland, warned that an invasion by the US would end the western military alliance and the post-WWII security framework. On Tuesday, after a Trump aide suggested using force to acquire Greenland, European leaders supported Denmark strongly, saying "Greenland belongs to its people." The White House later said Trump’s team was exploring “a range of options,” including the military, to acquire Greenland. But Barrot noted that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had assured him the US would not invade Greenland. Trump has shown long-standing interest in buying Greenland. Recently, heightened US military actions, like the Venezuela operation, increased tensions and raised questions about NATO’s future. Denmark held an urgent parliamentary session on Tuesday. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and Greenland’s Vivian Motzfeldt called for a sensible dialogue with the US, saying, "The shouting match must be replaced by a more sensible dialogue. Now." Trump claimed Greenland has many Chinese and Russian ships and accused Denmark of failing to defend the territory, which he said was critical for US security. Rasmussen called this a false image, saying, "The image that is being painted of Russian and Chinese ships right inside the Nuuk fjord and massive Chinese investments is not correct." Denmark’s Defence Minister, Troels Lund Poulsen, said the country invested nearly 100 billion Danish kroner (£11.6bn) in security, rejecting US claims it neglects Greenland’s protection.
