Hyderabad Police Warn Against Fake 'Digital Arrest' Scams Targeting Citizens
January 7, 2026
The Cyber Crime Wing of Hyderabad Police has issued a strong warning about a rise in ‘digital arrest’ frauds. In these scams, fraudsters pretend to be police, CBI, Customs officials, or even courier staff to trick people. They contact victims by phone, WhatsApp, or video calls. The scammers accuse them falsely of serious crimes such as money laundering, drug trafficking, human trafficking, or terrorism. They threaten to arrest the victim immediately, freeze bank accounts, or take legal action to scare them. These criminals also send fake documents like FIRs, arrest warrants, and fake letters claiming to be from the Reserve Bank of India to look real. Sometimes, they even threaten to harm the victim’s family reputation. Hyderabad Police clarified, “There is no such concept as a digital arrest.” They stressed that no one is arrested over phone or video calls and officials never ask for money to clear names or stop arrests. The police called these threats “entirely fake” and designed to exploit fear and ignorance. The advisory urges people to save all evidence such as call recordings, messages, emails, screenshots, transaction details, and app histories. Anyone facing such fraud should immediately report it by dialing the National Cybercrime Helpline 1930 or visiting cybercrime.gov.in.
