Kerala to Receive Winter Showers as Bay of Bengal Depression Intensifies
January 7, 2026
Parts of Kerala are expected to get winter showers over the next two days. This is caused by a weather system over the Bay of Bengal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Wednesday that a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal and nearby East Equatorial Indian Ocean may turn into a deep depression in 24 hours. The system will move west-northwest towards the southwest Bay of Bengal in 48 hours. Although it is heading towards Sri Lanka and the south Tamil Nadu coast, it will not get stronger after becoming a deep depression. Still, the system could cause heavy rain in parts of south Tamil Nadu and the Comorin region due to a trough formed by the system. Some isolated showers may spill over into Kerala because of this. The IMD noted that cyclonic systems rarely form in January. However, unseasonal rain can happen sometimes during this month due to small systems. A yellow alert has been issued for Idukki and Pathanamthitta districts for Thursday, warning of isolated heavy rain.
