US Embassy Warns Indian Students: Follow Laws or Face Visa Cancellation and Deportation
January 7, 2026
The US Embassy in India issued a strict warning on Wednesday for students holding US visas. The embassy said that breaking US laws can cause serious trouble, including visa cancellation, deportation, and bans on future travel. "Breaking U.S. laws can have serious consequences for your student visa. If you are arrested or violate any laws, your visa may be revoked, you may be deported, and you could be ineligible for future U.S. visas. Follow the rules and don’t jeopardize your travel. A US visa is a privilege, not a right," said the embassy in a post on X.
This warning comes amid tighter US immigration enforcement. Since December 26, all non-US citizens, including Green Card holders, must undergo mandatory biometric checks at every border entry and exit. This includes airports, land crossings, and seaports, covering everyone from children under 14 to adults over 79.
US Customs and Border Protection officials now take photographs of all non-US citizens entering or leaving the country. This system aims to improve security and reduce visa overstays. The Department of Homeland Security clarified it is not for broad surveillance, although some critics remain cautious.
Previously, biometric exit data was collected only in select ports as a pilot program. Now it is mandatory for all. The embassy’s advisory is a clear reminder: holding a US visa is a privilege that requires full compliance with American laws.
