Chennai to Study Women’s Safety in Public Spaces and Transport with ₹19.78 Lakh Project
January 8, 2026
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is launching a major study on how safe women feel in public spaces and on public transport at night in Chennai. The project has a budget of ₹19.78 lakh and will take over six months to complete. An earlier survey by GCC's Gender and Policy Lab found that nearly half of two-wheeler riders rated their night-time safety three or below on a five-point scale.
The new midline study will use mixed methods and cover all 15 zones of Chennai, including major transit points. It will survey 3,000 participants: 2,400 women, 100 transgender persons, and 500 people at public and transit locations. Data will be digitally collected about travel patterns, safety feelings, harassment incidents, and helpline awareness.
Surveys will happen at different times and days to capture varied experiences, and key places will be photographed. Focus group discussions and detailed interviews will add qualitative insights on safety perceptions. The study will also review previous reports and verify site data.
Experts will analyze the findings using statistics and compare them with earlier data. This study aims to provide a clearer picture of women’s safety in Chennai’s public spaces and transport, guiding future policies to improve security and comfort.
