Reddit Debate: Indian vs American Managers for H-1B Holders Amid Visa Struggles
January 8, 2026
A Reddit user shared his dilemma about choosing between an Indian manager and an American manager at work while dealing with H-1B visa uncertainties under the Trump administration. The Indian manager wants the Redditor to join his team. The Redditor described the Indian boss as "nonchalant," often talking in Hindi and using Hindi slang for quick understanding. However, he fears this manager might demand more work. On the other hand, the American manager is polite and respects off days.
The Redditor said, "Whereas in my current team, I have an american manager who is very polite, respects time and off days. (Now for context- my H1B picked last year) My friends are advising me against going under Indian bosses for they may suck the life out of you (same Indian work culture). However, on the contrary, with the current immigration climate I’m thinking the move may be good as they might push for my PERM & I-140 filing coz they have gone through the same thing in the past. This is more important to me than work life balance at this point in time."
Online suggestions were mixed. Many said it depends on the individual and warned against assuming American managers won’t help with Green Card sponsorship. One person pointed out from experience that an Indian manager let their six-year H-1B period expire without sponsorship, while an American manager at another company helped with the Green Card process.
One commenter said, "We really don't know. I always say why mess with something if someone is supportive and good? First try with the American manager and then decide," adding that some Indian managers can also be good and supportive.
This debate highlights the tough choices H-1B visa holders face amid changing US immigration rules and a challenging future in the country.
