Nick Reiner's Lawyer Quits Murder Case; Public Defender Takes Over
January 8, 2026
Nick Reiner, 32, charged with murdering his Hollywood director father Rob Reiner and mother Michele, has lost his high-profile lawyer, Alan Jackson. Jackson withdrew from the case during a court hearing in Los Angeles. Outside court, Jackson said, "Circumstances beyond my control, but more importantly circumstances beyond Nick's control, have made it impossible for us to continue our representation." He added, "I'm legally and ethically prohibited from explaining the reasons why." Jackson also said he believed Reiner was innocent.
Rob Reiner, the 78-year-old director of classic films like This is Spinal Tap and A Few Good Men, and Michele Singer Reiner, 70, were found stabbed to death in their Brentwood home on 14 December.
District Attorney Nathan Hochman strongly disagreed with Jackson, stating, "We are fully confident that a jury will convict Nick Reiner beyond a reasonable doubt of the brutal murder of his parents - Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner."
Since Jackson stepped down, Nick Reiner is now represented by public defender Kimberly Greene, who has asked for time to prepare the defense. Reiner did not enter a plea during his brief court appearance but acknowledged he understood the rights he gave up by not doing so.
The next hearing is scheduled for 23 February. It remains unclear who has been funding Reiner's legal defense, considering the family’s estimated net worth of $200 million. Nick Reiner also has a brother and sister.
During the hearing, Reiner smiled a few times while speaking with sheriffs' deputies. The case continues to draw attention due to its tragic and high-profile nature.
