NHAI Targets Completion of New Six-Lane Kulur Bridge Before 2026 Monsoon
January 8, 2026
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is hopeful of completing the new six-lane bridge at Kulur before the 2026 monsoon season. The bridge spans the Phalguni (Gurupura) River on National Highway 66. It is part of the B.C. Road-Surathkal Port Connectivity Road widening project. The bridge work started on April 12, 2021, and was awarded to Pune-based M/s Shinde Developers Pvt. Ltd. for ₹56 crore. Originally due in October 2022, the project has been delayed over three years. The old Kulur Bridge has been in use since 1952 and is now nearly dilapidated. NHAI had suggested closing it in 2019, but the lack of alternatives forced continued traffic on the bridge, exposing users to risks. According to NHAI Mangaluru Project Director Abudlla Javed Azmi, all pier caps except one are complete, with the last due soon. About 60 girders have been cast at Panambur, ready to be launched. The new bridge will be 42 metres wide, featuring two 7-metre-wide main carriageways and service roads with pedestrian paths on both sides. After the new bridge opens, the old bridge will close to vehicles but will carry shifted utility lines like water and power. NHAI hopes to commission the new structure before the monsoon hits in 2026.
