Jaundice Outbreak Sparks Student Protest at VIT Bhopal Over Water Safety and Campus Care
January 8, 2026
At VIT Bhopal, more than 3,000 students protested on November 25 after 33 students fell sick with jaundice. The illness is tied to poor-quality food and water on campus. Even as 80% of students have returned, fresh cases continue to appear. Recent reports say 8 to 9 students got jaundice-related symptoms every week. One hosteller said, "Both my roommates are currently infected. On December 26 another friend was detected with jaundice inside the campus. We don’t get tickets to go home every time. So we chose to stay back and study." Students complain about water scarcity, bad infrastructure, and compressed semesters. Health experts reveal many cases are viral hepatitis caused by contaminated water. A doctor explained, "Hepatitis is basically liver inflammation. Jaundice is a symptom of the same." Officials have connected the outbreak to E. coli bacteria found in campus water. Sehore's Chief Medical Officer confirmed E. coli caused diarrhea on campus before jaundice and hepatitis were diagnosed. Despite this, VIT Bhopal officials say mineral water and water purifiers are provided for students. A student said, "The management says ozonisers have been installed, but we haven’t seen any so far." Medical facilities on campus are lacking; nearby hospitals are 15 to 62 km away. Parents worry about inadequate healthcare and call for better monitoring. VIT refused to comment on the situation. The crisis exposes serious concerns about student safety and campus preparedness in VIT Bhopal.
