US Suspends Aid to Somalia Over Alleged Illegal Seizure of Food Aid
January 8, 2026
The US government has stopped all aid to Somalia. It accuses Somali officials of illegally taking 76 tonnes of food from a UN World Food Programme (WFP) warehouse. The food was meant for vulnerable people suffering from drought, floods, and conflict. A US State Department statement said, "The Trump administration has a zero-tolerance policy for waste, theft, and diversion of life-saving assistance." The aid suspension will continue until Somalia's government takes responsibility and fixes the problem. The US pays almost a third of the WFP's funding, giving $2 billion in 2025. Somalia is fighting Islamist militants and rebuilding after war and drought. Recently, relations between Washington and Mogadishu have worsened. President Trump previously criticized Somali migrants in the US and tensions grew after Israel recognized Somaliland, a region Somalia claims. The WFP reports 4.6 million Somalis are in crisis hunger. The seized aid was meant to help these people survive tough conditions. Somalia has not yet responded to the US accusations.
