Assam BJP Rejects Opposition Claims of Voter List Manipulation Ahead of 2026 Polls
January 8, 2026
GUWAHATI: The Assam BJP has strongly denied Opposition claims that it is tampering with electoral rolls to secure victory in the upcoming Assembly elections. BJP spokesperson Kamal Kumar Medhi on January 8, 2026, criticised the Opposition as "directionless" for backing Raijor Dal MLA Akhil Gogoi's allegations without proof. Gogoi claimed the BJP aimed to delete 10,000 pro-Opposition voters per constituency and directed its MLAs and district heads to identify loyal voters for action. The Congress and CPI (Marxist) also accused BJP of manipulating voter lists, with CPI(M) citing instructions to review voter lists in Bajali district's Muslim areas. Medhi said, "A confused and directionless Opposition, unable to place even a single credible political issue before the people, is now suffering from deep frustration." He added that people trust the BJP to protect indigenous communities and Indian-origin citizens. The 126-member Assam Assembly polls are expected by May 2026, with BJP led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
