BJP Leaders Clash Over Chamaraja Assembly Ticket in Mysuru
January 8, 2026
The battle for the BJP ticket from Chamaraja Assembly segment in Mysuru has already begun, more than two years before the next Karnataka Assembly election. Former MP Pratap Simha and former MLA L. Nagendra both publicly want the nomination. Currently, Congress MLA Harish Gowda holds the seat after beating Mr. Nagendra in the 2023 polls.
Pratap Simha, who was not chosen again by BJP for the Mysuru Lok Sabha seat in 2024 after two terms, recently declared he aims to contest from Chamaraja next time. His announcement drew a sharp response from L. Nagendra, the BJP’s Mysuru city president. Mr. Nagendra said, "The decision on the party’s candidate rests solely with the party high command," and questioned why Mr. Simha did not campaign in Chamaraja during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Mr. Nagendra highlighted his 30 years of loyalty to BJP in Mysuru. Though he lost in 2023, he gained more votes than in 2018 when he had won. He expressed confidence about getting the ticket and winning again. He asked Mr. Simha not to confuse voters with early claims.
Adding to the competition, neurologist Dr. Shushrutha Gowda, who joined BJP in 2024, also announced his interest in the Chamaraja seat.
Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, BJP MP for Mysuru and Mr. Simha’s replacement in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, said aspirants are free to express their goals. However, the final decision will be made by the party leadership.
Political experts suggest that with the BJP and JD(S) alliance, the regional party may also stake a claim for the Vokkaliga-dominated Chamaraja seat in a possible seat-sharing deal.
