50 Sheep Storm German Supermarket, Cause Chaos Before Being Herded Out
January 9, 2026
About 50 sheep broke away from their flock and stormed a Penny discount supermarket in Burgsinn, Bavaria, on Monday. The animals surprised customers as they wandered through the aisles, showing a strange fondness for the checkout area. Witnesses said the sheep resisted nibbling fresh produce but knocked over drinks and glass bottles, leaving a trail of damage. Videos showed the sheep bleating and looking curious but calm. Philipp Stiehler, board chair of Penny South-West Germany, said around 20 customers handled the visit calmly. After 20 minutes, staff guided the sheep outside, where they rejoined their herd. The German embassy in London joked on X: “50 runaway sheep ram-paged through a German supermarket in rural Baa-varia, causing shear mania.” Shepherd Dieter Michler explained he was moving 500 sheep to winter shelter when about 50 got distracted by acorns and followed someone into the store. Michler said, “I wouldn’t have thought it possible that they would voluntarily walk into the supermarket.” After staff used loud noises to shoo them out, the sheep were happy back with their herd. Penny announced it would sponsor feed for the 50 sheep for a year and won’t charge the shepherd for any damage.
