India’s first commercial Quantum Computer will be installed at the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) in Dharwad, Karnataka. Priyank Kharge, Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, IT & BT, said, "Karnataka is moving decisively in the quantum space. The deployment of India’s first commercial Quantum Computer at IIIT-Dharwad marks a significant milestone in our journey to build a world-class quantum ecosystem." On January 8, Mr. Kharge met with Bengaluru-based deeptech company QpiAI and Singapore’s advanced water tech firm ZWEEC. The goal is to boost Karnataka’s leadership in quantum technologies and improve rural water security. Mr. Kharge said, "Through strong collaboration with companies like QpiAI, the State government was committed to advancing the Karnataka Quantum Roadmap while ensuring that cutting-edge technology translates into real impact." The IIIT-Dharwad is set to become a quantum hub with a new Centre of Excellence in Quantum AI and Computing recently announced by the state government. QpiAI plans to grow its quantum computer from 25 qubits to 1,000 qubits in the next two to three years, making Karnataka a key center for research, talent, and industry in quantum computing. Additionally, discussions with ZWEEC focused on advanced solutions for rural water supply. The Singapore-based firm offers early detection of drinking water contamination, algal blooms, and smart water infrastructure monitoring through automated data technologies. "These solutions have relevance for rural drinking water systems and the government will evaluate the technology further," said Mr. Kharge. He added a pilot project in partnership with the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Department may be explored to test effectiveness and scalability on the ground. This initiative strengthens Karnataka’s efforts to combine cutting-edge quantum technology with real-world rural development needs.
