Uttar Pradesh Parties Race to Save Votes After 2.89 Crore Names Deleted in Voter List
January 9, 2026
Uttar Pradesh has seen a massive drop in its draft voter list after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). A staggering 2.89 crore names, nearly 19%, were deleted from the 2025 voter list. This is the highest number of deletions in any State so far.
On January 8, 2026, Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav called on party leaders to dig deep at the booth level. He said, “We must all unite again to save every single vote.” He stressed the importance of voter names, adding, “Understand that having your name on the voter list is a sign of your citizenship.”
Akhilesh Yadav warned about a possible BJP law that could link voter list exclusion with losing ration cards and government benefits.
SP spokesperson Nasser Salim urged citizens to check their names and file claims or objections by February 6 through the Election Commission’s official process. He said the SP is working legally and peacefully to ensure no eligible voter is left out. He explained that the call to save every vote is “not about partisan interests but about ensuring every citizen can vote freely and fairly.”
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is also active. BJP spokesperson Rakesh Tripathi said their party is holding awareness drives and encouraging submissions since the SIR announcement.
Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai added that Congress has set up district-level committees to oversee voter additions and prevent any malpractices. He said meetings at the village level aim to include all eligible voters.
The Election Commission published the draft electoral rolls on January 6, starting a window for claims and objections until February 6. The final list will be published on March 6.
Political parties in Uttar Pradesh are working hard to ensure that every eligible voter stays on the list. The race is on to save every vote ahead of future elections.
