Violent clashes erupted in multiple cities across Iran on Wednesday as protests against the government's handling of the economic crisis continued into their eleventh day. Social media videos showed tense scenes with gunfire, security forces firing guns and tear gas at protesters throwing stones in return. A viral video showed a protester ramming his car into security forces in Mashhad. Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency reported that two policemen, Hadi Azarsalim and Moslem Mahdavinasab, were shot dead by armed individuals among the rioters in the southwestern town of Lordegan. The unrest has now spread to 111 cities and towns across all 31 provinces, according to the Human Rights Activist News Agency (HRANA). HRANA said at least 34 protesters and four security personnel have been killed, and around 2,200 protesters arrested. BBC Persian confirmed 21 deaths and identities, while Iranian authorities counted five security personnel deaths. The protests began on December 28 in Tehran with shopkeepers angry over a sharp drop in the rial's value against the US dollar and soaring inflation at 40% due to sanctions and poor governance. University students joined the protests, which quickly spread nationwide. Protesters have been heard chanting slogans against Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and in support of Reza Pahlavi, son of the late shah, who lives in exile.
