One Dead, 38 Missing After Massive Landfill Collapse in Philippines
January 9, 2026
A large mountain of rubbish collapsed at the Binaliw Landfill in Cebu City, Philippines, on Thursday. It killed a 22-year-old woman and left 38 people missing, authorities said. Twelve injured sanitation workers were rescued from the debris and sent to hospital. Many victims are landfill workers. The cause of the collapse is still unknown. Around 300 people from government agencies and civilian groups are working on the rescue. Several excavators, ambulances, and fire trucks are at the site. Cebu Mayor Nestor Archival said on Facebook, "All response teams remain fully engaged in search and retrieval efforts to locate the remaining missing persons." Cebu City councillor Joel Garganera told The Freeman newspaper that the collapse may have happened suddenly. He blamed poor waste management. "Operators had been cutting into the mountain, mining the soil, and then piling garbage to form another mountain of waste," Garganera said. "It's not a sanitary landfill. It's already an open dumpsite." Landfills like this are common in major Philippine cities such as Cebu, a key trading and transport hub in the Visayas region.
