UK to Require Electronic Travel Authorisation from UAE Travelers from 2026
January 9, 2026
Planning a trip to the United Kingdom from the UAE will soon need more than just a passport and ticket. Emirates has issued a strong warning to travelers. The UK is changing its immigration system to digital. Missing the new digital rule could stop you from boarding your flight.
The UK is replacing paper visas with electronic visas (e-visas). It is also introducing a new Digital Travel Authorisation called the ETA. The ETA gives digital permission to travel. It will be needed for some visitors who earlier did not require a visa.
Emirates says travelers who do not need a visa to stay in the UK for up to six months must now get an ETA. You can apply for it on the official UK government website: www.gov.uk/electronic-travel-authorisation. From February 25, 2026, if you don't have a valid ETA, you cannot board a plane or legally enter the UK.
Those who have UK visas on paper or expired biometric cards must create an account with UK Visas and Immigration to get their digital status. Visit www.gov.uk/eVisa to do this. Using old or paper documents could cause problems.
If you have Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) shown by a passport stamp or vignette, you can apply for a free "No Time Limit" digital visa. Travelers with an e-visa must update their passport details online at www.gov.uk/update-uk-visas-immigration-account-details before travel.
Emirates strongly advises all travelers to apply for the ETA or update their visa status well before flying to avoid last-minute issues at the airport.
