Central University’s CELT Boosts English Skills for Rural Students with Custom Courses
January 9, 2026
The Centre for English Language Teaching (CELT) at the Central University of Karnataka (CUK) is growing as a key platform to improve English among students from rural areas. Faculty members Anil Kamble and Sunil Kumar Pandey shared details during their campus visit on January 8. CELT works under the Department of English and focuses on a learner-centred approach. It first identifies gaps in students’ skills, then creates tailored content focusing on grammar, vocabulary, and communication skills. The centre runs two batches, balancing classroom lessons with activity-based learning. Mr. Kamble said, "Besides teaching grammar, the faculty focuses on interactive methods such as group discussions, interactive sessions, presentations and mock interviews to help students overcome anxiety while speaking in English and also reduce stage fear." Students from all CUK departments join the courses to sharpen their English. The centre offers six-month courses, three-month courses, and two-week crash courses. These are supported by advanced language labs and smart classrooms. The CELT team also runs outreach programs in rural schools across Narona and Kadaganchi villages in Aland taluk and other schools in Kalaburagi city. They provide English classes and interactive sessions there. Mr. Kamble and Dr. Pandey urge educational institutions, students, and teachers to use the centre’s facilities for better language learning.
