January 9, 2026
An avalanche of garbage collapsed at a waste segregation facility in Cebu City, Philippines, killing one worker and injuring several others. The disaster struck in Binaliw village, where a large pile of rubbish suddenly gave way, burying people working at the landfill. Police confirmed that 12 people were rescued alive, but at least 38 remain missing under tons of waste.
One rescued woman died on the way to hospital, reported regional police director Brigadier General Roderick Maranan. The injured survivors were taken for medical treatment. Rescue teams worked through the night, carefully climbing over unstable garbage piles to find those trapped.
Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival said the number of missing people is changing as rescue continues. On Facebook, he stated, "All response teams remain fully engaged in search and retrieval efforts to locate the remaining missing persons with strict adherence to safety protocols."
He added, "The city government assures the public and the families of those affected that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure safety, transparency, accountability and compassionate assistance as operations continue."
Police said one building hit by the collapse was a warehouse used to sort recyclable materials. The landfill employs about 110 workers in total.
