Heavy Rain Strikes Northern Emirates with Alerts; Roads Turn Wet and Windy
January 9, 2026
Residents of the Northern Emirates woke up to heavy rain today as a strong weather system moved in. The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) reported intense rains in Khorfakkan, Masafi, and Al Manama. The rain lowered temperatures and gave a cool winter feel. However, in places like Fujairah’s mountains, streets flooded, turning into small streams. Lightning flashed and thunder rumbled in many spots. The east coast saw grey skies that made the weekend start dramatic but warned of flooding in low areas.
The NCM issued yellow and red alerts for many parts of the Northern and Eastern UAE. These warnings tell people to “be on the lookout” and “vigilant” as clouds causing heavy rain keep forming. The rain is expected to spread inland to parts of Dubai and Ras Al Khaimah today. Weather experts say the rain comes from a surface low pressure combined with an upper-air low pressure, creating unstable air that leads to rain clouds. Winds could reach 40 km/h, possibly causing dust and reduced highway visibility. This may make travel between emirates tricky.
The rainy, cool conditions are normal for UAE winters and should continue through the weekend and next week. Nights and mornings will stay humid, increasing chances of fog. Temperatures will stay lower than usual, especially in northern and mountain areas. Clouds and scattered showers may also appear even outside main rain zones, making weather changeable.
The NCM advises everyone in the UAE to stay updated and follow safety instructions. Drivers should be extra careful on wet roads and in low visibility areas, mostly in northern and eastern parts. With the weather expected to remain unsettled, authorities urge people to prioritize safety and plan travel wisely.
